Six hours in the Port of Blanes, no exam, and the Licencia de Navegación, Spain's basic boating licence, is yours. From then on you can rent a motorboat up to 6 metres any day of your holiday. You don't need to live in Spain: your passport is enough, and the course is taught in English.

Why you need it now
Since 1 October 2026 (Royal Decree 1188/2025), renting a motorboat in Spain requires a boating qualification, including the small boats that used to be rented without one. If you hold no qualification at home, the Licencia de Navegación is the shortest way to comply: one day, no exam.
What to bring
- A valid passport or national ID card. No NIE or Spanish residency needed.
- The medical check: a short test at a driver medical centre (centro de reconocimiento de conductores). There are two in Blanes, and you can do it the day before. The student pays for it and it's valid for two years.
- Be 18, or 16 with written permission from your parents.
If you fly home before the licence is ready
The school issues the licence when the course ends. If for any reason the document isn't ready before you leave, we send it to your home address by registered mail, in any country.
What the licence is not
- It's not an international permit. It's a Spanish qualification for boating in Spain, and you shouldn't count on it being recognised anywhere else.
- There's no online part. By law the theory is taught in person: on board, within the same six hours.
- It's not for any boat: motor only, up to 6 metres long, in daylight and no more than 2 nautical miles from the coast.

In the same port it lets you rent the three licence boats of Costa Brava Rent a Boat: the Mingolla Brava 19, the Trimarchi 57S and the Pacific Craft 625. The practical session is on the Trimarchi, so the day you rent it you already know it.

Do I need a licence to rent a boat in Spain?
Since 1 October 2026, yes: Royal Decree 1188/2025 requires a boating qualification to rent a motorboat, including the small ones that used to be rented without one. If you hold none, the Licencia de Navegación is the shortest route: one day of training and no exam. If you already have a licence from a European Economic Area country, it may be valid here.
Can I get the licence if I don't live in Spain?
Yes. The rules don't ask for nationality or residency: all you need is a valid passport or ID card and the medical check, which you can do at a centre in Blanes.
Is the course taught in English?
Yes. You can take it in English, as well as in Spanish and Catalan.
Can I do the theory online before I come?
No. The regulations require the theory for the Licencia de Navegación to be taught in person and don't allow any distance format. It's taught on board, on the same day: two hours of theory and four of practice.
Is there an exam?
No. The licence has no exam: the school certifies the training and issues the licence when you finish.
Is the licence valid in my country?
It's a Spanish qualification for boating in Spain. It's not an international permit and, as a rule, it isn't recognised outside Spain: if you want to go boating at home, check what's required there.
I already have a boating licence from my country. Do I need the course?
Maybe not. Spain recognises recreational qualifications from European Economic Area countries and some others for skippering Spanish boats. Write to us with the licence you hold and we'll tell you if it works.
What if I leave before I have the licence in my hands?
We send it to your home by registered mail, in any country.
